One of the verses in my Bible reading today was Psalm 119:33. This chapter, which is the longest chapter in the Book of Psalms, focuses on the importance of God’s law and the psalmist’s commitment to following it. In this particular verse, the psalmist is expressing a desire for God to teach him the way of His statutes.
“Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.”
The psalmist, most likely King David, acknowledges that he needs divine guidance and instruction to understand and follow God’s commandments. By asking the Lord to teach him, the psalmist humbly seeks wisdom and understanding in order to live according to God’s Will.
The phrase “the way of thy statutes” refers to the path or manner in which the statutes, or commandments, of God are to be followed. The psalmist desires to gain insight into the correct and proper way to obey God’s laws. This indicates a deep longing for a close relationship with God and a commitment to living in accordance with His will.
David concludes the verse by expressing his determination to keep God’s teachings “unto the end.” This implies an enduring commitment to follow God’s statutes faithfully throughout his life, demonstrating a sincere desire for obedience and devotion.
Praying for God’s guidance, having a willingness to learn, and maintaining a resolute dedication to following God’s commandments until the end of one’s days is a profound and meaningful perspective on spiritual growth and a life of faith. I would like to speak on each aspect:
(1) Praying for God’s guidance
Recognizing our need for divine guidance demonstrates humility and an acknowledgment that we are not self-sufficient. By seeking God’s direction, we invite Him into our lives and acknowledge His sovereignty. Praying for spiritual guidance opens us up to the possibility of receiving wisdom, discernment, and clarity from a much Higher Source. Do we seek the help of a car mechanic when we have a leak on the kitchen? Do we seek the assistance of a foot doctor when we have a dental problem? When we pray for God’s guidance we are acknowledging the fact that we can do nothing on our own, and that we need our Heavenly Father to guide us on the right path. In the New Testament, Jesus teaches about the commandments and provides guidance for living a righteous life. He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6), reiterating the importance of following Him and His teachings.
When we pray for God’s guidance, we can do so in the name of Jesus, acknowledging that He is the ultimate source of wisdom and understanding. Through Jesus, we have access to the Father and can seek His guidance and direction for our lives.
(2) Willingness to learn
The desire to learn reflects an attitude of openness and teachability. It means recognizing that we don’t have all the answers and that there is always more to discover and understand. By being receptive to learning, we position ourselves to grow in our knowledge and understanding of God’s will, His character, and His ways. I’m reminded of the Psalm which says, “Teach me your way, Lord, and I will live by your truth.” (86:11, CSV) Willingness to learn aligns with Jesus’ teachings about being His disciples and learning from Him. Jesus invited people to come to Him and learn from Him, saying, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls”. (Matthew 11:29)
(3) Resolute dedication to following God’s commandments
This heartfelt commitment implies a steadfastness and unwavering resolve to live according to the principles and values laid out in God’s Word the Bible. It goes beyond mere compliance and encompasses a heartfelt desire to align our thoughts, actions, and attitudes with God’s standards. This dedication reflects a deep trust in our Heavenly Father’s wisdom and a willingness to submit to His authority. Our Lord Jesus Christ placed a great deal of focus on the importance of obedience to God’s commandments. He said, “If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments”. (John 14:15) A resolute dedication to following God’s commandments can be seen as an expression of love and devotion to Jesus, who set an example for us to follow.
The idea of maintaining this Godly mindset until the end of one’s days highlights the importance of perseverance and consistency in our faith journey. It implies that our commitment to God’s guidance and obedience to His way should not waver or diminish over time. It is a lifelong pursuit of spiritual growth, a continual surrender to God’s leading, and a steadfast adherence to His truth.
By praying for guidance, embracing a willingness to learn, and maintaining a resolute dedication to God’s commandments, we can cultivate a deeper relationship with God, gain spiritual insight, and experience a Spirit-filled journey of faith. It is a path that fosters personal growth, aligns us with God’s purposes, and brings fulfilment and meaning to our lives.
As you continue to strive to be obedient to God, may He bless you through His Son Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit,
