In the course of time, some new believers might ask, “What am I missing in my relationship with Jesus?” It is also natural for seasoned, or mature believers to ask the same thing. This question often arises during some of the most difficult times in life, or when facing challenging situations.
Hopefully the following will be of assistance.
Prayer
Regular and sincere communication with Jesus through prayer can help foster a closer relationship. Share your joys, struggles, and concerns with Him, and listen for His guidance and wisdom.
Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (CSB)
Scripture Study
Engage in reading and studying the Bible to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus’ teachings, His life, and the principles He taught. Reflect on how those teachings can be applied in your own life.
From Psalm 119:105 we read, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that “all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
Worship and Fellowship
Participate in worship services, join a church community, or engage in Christian fellowship with like-minded individuals. These activities can provide support, encouragement, and opportunities for growth.
In Psalm 133:1 we read, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (ASV) We also read in Hebrews 10:24-25, “let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.”
Service and Compassion
Follow Jesus’ example by serving others and showing compassion. Engage in acts of kindness, volunteer for charitable causes, and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around you.
In the Gospel according to Matthew, we read: “‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me; I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and take you in, or without clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” (25:35-40, CSB)
Self-reflection and Introspection
Regularly take time to reflect on your own thoughts, actions, and attitudes. Identify areas for growth and ask for Jesus’ help in becoming a better person.
The psalmist, as recorded in Psalm 139:23-24, pleads with the Lord: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (ESV)
Trust and Surrender
Develop trust in Jesus and surrender your worries and burdens to Him. Allow Him to guide your life and have faith that He has a plan for you.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Each person’s situation is going to be different. These Bible passages are only a starting point, and there are many more verses in the Bible that speak to each topic. It’s beneficial to explore the Bible further to discover more verses that resonate with your personal relationship with Jesus. Speak with a good minister or mature Bible believers concerning your unique situation.
God bless you,
